Godzilla Sights in Shinjuku

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building (left) stands next to the Shinjuku Sumitomo Building in Shinjuku. Photo by Brett Homenick.

While in Shinjuku today, I snapped some photos of the Shinjuku Sumitomo Building and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building. Both buildings feature prominently in the Godzilla series, namely Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (1991) and Godzilla 1985 (1984), respectively. The photos came out quite nicely. Enjoy!

THE TOKYO METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT BUILDING! A Nighttime View of This Familiar Godzilla Location!

The Tokyo Government Metropolitan Building (a.k.a. the Tax Towers). Photo by Brett Homenick.

While in the area, I decided to snap a few photos of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, as seen during the climactic battle in Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (1991). I threw in a couple of extra shots of the Shinjuku Sumitomo Building for the heck of it. Take a look!

SCENES FROM SHINJUKU! Revisiting Some Famous Skyscrapers!

A view of the Shinjuku Sumitomo Building in (where else?) Shinjuku. Photo by Brett Homenick.

Today was a busy day, and since I spent some time in Shinjuku, I decided to photograph some familiar skyscrapers to fans of the Heisei Godzilla series. The first was the Shinjuku Sumitomo Building, on which Godzilla fell after being temporarily defeated by the Super X in Godzilla 1985 (1984).

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building (a.k.a. the Tax Towers) towers over Shinjuku on this cloudy day. Photo by Brett Homenick.

Nearby is the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building (or the Tax Towers), which was featured prominently during the climactic battle of Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (1991).

There isn't much else to say, as I've photographed and blogged about these buildings in  the past. But I wanted to take this opportunity to share my most recent photos.

Another big update is coming soon, so watch this space.

SHINJUKU AT NIGHT! Taking a Stroll Around the Skyscraper District

Shinjuku Station in Tokyo is well known for any number of its notable sights and locations. Some of them (such as the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building and the Shinjuku Sumitomo Building) have been featured in Godzilla films. Recently I took an evening stroll around Shinjuku's skyscraper district (near the station's West Exit) and snapped some photos of my walk. It reminded me of Godzilla 1985 on more than one occasion. Enjoy!

SHINJUKU'S SUMITOMO BUILDING: An Unsung Godzilla Location!

Holy skyscraper, Batman! Shinjuku is home to many tall buildings, most notably the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building (a.k.a. the Tax Towers) and the Sumitomo Building.

Godzilla movies are recognized and appreciated for many reasons among their fans. Those who live in or travel to Japan get to experience some of the shooting locations up close and personal.

The Sumitomo Building was featured very prominently in Godzilla 1985 (1984). Godzilla collapses against the side of the skyscraper after his initial battle with the Super X, but after the Super X is destroyed by the Big G, he topples the building onto the wreckage.

It's amazing to me that such an iconic location in the Godzilla series routinely gets ignored in favor of other, less relevant places. Perhaps that reveals a lack of research on the part of certain writers. Whatever the case, when in Tokyo, this is one location that should not be missed.

The great thing about the Sumitomo Building is that it seemed to hold up just fine after I bumped into it. They must have made lots of improvements since Godzilla was on the scene!

Here's my attempt at photographing myself in front of the Sumitomo Building, but I was way too close. Next time I have the chance, I'm standing much farther away to get the whole building in the shot!

Virtually next door, of course, is the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, featured very prominently during the climactic battle of Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (1991).

Shinjuku has a lot to offer its visitors, whether they're Godzilla fans or not. But if you're into the Toho Titan and wish to see the real-life locations used in the films, these two skyscrapers should not be missed!
