Rhodes Reason: Cherished Memories

Rhodes Reason reenacts his improvised "Marlon Brando-ism" from King Kong Escapes with yours truly.

Rhodes Reason has passed away at the age of 84. I'm having a difficult time trying to find the proper words to convey my thoughts. There's a lot to say, so I hope the following blog post will do at least some justice to Rhodes Reason and the impact he had on my life.

I first contacted Rhodes through his wife Jeri in early 2006. At the time, I had just started conducting interviews with people connected with Toho kaiju films, and given that Rhodes was the star of one of my favorites, King Kong Escapes (1967), I was eager to speak with him.

Rhodes has always shunned publicity and never liked interviews. Fortunately, however, Jeri passed my request on to Rhodes. Shortly thereafter, I found out that Rhodes wanted to talk with me. Suffice it to say, I was nervous. I'd never spoken with an actor (let alone star) from Toho's Showa era, so it would be a first for me. I remember sitting in my recliner waiting for his call, feeling about as excited as I was anxious.

When Rhodes got on the phone, we spoke for a long time and had a great chat. At this point, the details were hazy, but I remember being struck by Rhodes' deadpan sense of humor. He loved to tell jokes and make people laugh, completely at odds with his serious and authoritative screen persona.

During this time, we had a series of telephone conversations, and it became clear that Rhodes and (especially) Jeri were interested in attending G-FEST. J.D. Lees was delighted to have Rhodes headline the convention, so we agreed to wait until 2007 to bring Rhodes as the convention's guest of honor.

Not only did Rhodes grant very few interviews, he rarely attended conventions. Aside from G-FEST, he only ever guested at a show geared toward Westerns, which was held in North Carolina in 2000. Rhodes never charged for his autograph, and happily answered through-the-mail autograph requests for his fans, but he almost never attended public events. G-FEST would be a major exception for him.

I met Rhodes and Jeri in person for the first time at G-FEST. Although J.D. intended to pick the couple up from the airport (while I assisted Shelley Sweeney, who would be arriving at about the time), J.D. came back to the Crowne Plaza without the Reasons. He couldn't find them at the terminal. Sometime thereafter, the Reasons arrived at the Crowne Plaza on their own. I instantly recognized them when they entered, and I went up and introduced myself. I'd get to know them very well throughout the weekend.

I finally got to interview Rhodes about King Kong Escapes during our panel discussion. Damon Foster edited together a tongue-in-cheek introductory video that Rhodes seemed to enjoy quite a bit. During the interview, Rhodes used his acerbic wit to entertain the audience about his memories of KKE. I was happy to play along when I could. When it was over, Jeri told me that Rhodes and I made a great team.

Earlier, on Friday night, King Kong Escapes screened at the Pickwick. When Rhodes made his way down the aisle to take his seat, the audience spontaneously broke into applause. I was later told that this unscripted sign of admiration really touched him.

A major highlight for me happened during the awards luncheon. When J.D. introduced Rhodes to the audience, he stood up and acknowledged his fans. Everyone in the hall stood as well. I was standing next to Rhodes, applauding like everyone else, when Rhodes suddenly brought me closer to him and planted one on my cheek. I don't think I've ever been told "thank you" in a better way.

On Sunday evening, I spent several hours in the Reasons' suite, listening to Rhodes' stories about his time in Hollywood. I truly enjoyed ever moment of it, and I'll treasure those memories forever.

After G-FEST, I kept in touch with Rhodes and Jeri by phone and e-mail. In 2008, the Reasons left Portland and moved to Palm Springs. As coincidence would have it, I ended up in the same area about a year later, and I was able to see the Reasons a few times. I loved asking Rhodes' opinions of whatever new movies were out at the time. If a movie had a political edge to it, chances are he liked it.

I tried to see the Reasons when I visited California in July 2012, but Rhodes' health wouldn't allow it. I was disappointed to have missed the chance, but I had no idea it would be my final opportunity. I last spoke to Rhodes on the phone a few months ago. He seemed to be doing fairly well, even though his health was not so great. He was interested in hearing about my meeting with Mie Hama and asked me to e-mail the photo I took with her, which I did. That would be my last direct communication with Rhodes Reason.

I miss you already, Rhodes. You were always great to me, and I hope I was able to show how much you meant to me. I'll always remember you. With all my love.

Shelley Sweeney: 2007 and 2011

Yours truly sandwiched between G-FEST XIV's guests of honor in 2007, Rhodes Reason and Shelley Sweeney.

It's hard to believe that I first spoke to Shelley Sweeney in late 2005. When she came to America to film a movie called I Am Nipponjin (co-starring with Kamen Rider superstar Hiroshi Fujioka), we conducted an interview for G-FAN magazine about her acting credits in the Godzilla series, most notably as Catherine Berger in Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II (1993). The interview turned out so well, and so much interest was drummed up, that Shelley was formally invited by J.D. Lees and me to attend G-FEST XIV in 2007.

Shelley and I stand in front of the Rainforest Cafe in Chicago after officially wrapping up our convention duties at G-FEST.

Shelley became one of our most popular guests at one of the smoothest-run G-FESTs in history. Handling herself with the utmost professionalism, Shelley signed autographs and posed for pictures all weekend, treating every fan who approached her respectfully.

When G-FEST wrapped, I didn't realize it would be nearly four years before I would see Shelley again, but that's exactly what would happen.

With no one around, sometimes you have to do your own photography! Shelley and I pose in front of the Statue of Liberty replica in Odaiba.

After moving to Japan in March 2011, visiting Tokyo became my biggest priority. As I'm not much of a sightseer, my main area of interest was visiting old friends (and making new ones!) while in the city. One of the first people I asked was Shelley, who was happy to meet me again.

Follow the Rainbow Bridge! Shelley and I relax after crossing the walkway from Odaiba.

When we made plans, Shelley suggested crossing the Rainbow Bridge, which sounded great to me. Providing a scenic view of Tokyo Bay, I knew it would be a great experience. Of course, for me, it's not so much about the activity but the company with whom you do the activity.

Kampai! With our journey behind us, we enjoyed drinks at a nearby Becker's.

With our walk in the history books, we finished our conversation at a Becker's inside the nearest train station. It was a fun morning, and the next time I'm in Tokyo (which hopefully won't be too long from now!), I hope to see Shelley again.

Oh, and if the still photos aren't enough, here's some video of our trek. Enjoy!

Happy birthday, Rhodes Reason!

Rhodes Reason at his home in March 2011. His poster of King Kong Escapes would no doubt be coveted by all sorts of collectors, big and small. Photo by Brett Homenick.

April 19 marks the 81st birthday of Rhodes Reason, the actor most kaiju eiga fans associate with his starring role in King Kong Escapes (1967). As Commander Carl Nelson, Rhodes provided an anchor of credibility to the picture, which was an otherwise colorful, over-the-top adventure.

In 2007, Rhodes headlined G-FEST XIV, which highlighted the King Kong movies made by Toho Studios. Shelley Sweeney (Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla 1993) was also on hand for the festivities.

Happy birthday, Rhodes! (Oh, and by the way, I did enjoy The King's Speech. Thank you for the recommendation!)

Lunch with Rhodes Reason

Your humble blogmeister with Rhodes and Jeri Reason.

Today I shared an enjoyable meal with Rhodes Reason (King Kong Escapes, Voodoo Island) and his wife, Jeri. As we haven't met for a while, there was a lot to catch up on, and we chatted for a couple of hours on a variety of subjects. All in all, it was great to be in their company again.

We met at the Rock Garden Cafe in Palm Springs, CA. I've never eaten at the restaurant before, but I was impressed with the food and the atmosphere. It certainly gets a hearty thumbs-up from me!

Hangin' with the coolest guy in Palm Springs.

In particular, I enjoyed hearing about their recent trip to Australia, which sounded like a lot of fun. They're currently planning another trip for this summer. I was pleased to hear about how busy they've been and continue to be.

My sincere thanks to Rhodes and Jeri for an excellent meal and even better company!

G-FEST 2007 DVD

Your humble blogmeister hanging out with Rhodes Reason and Shelley Sweeney, the two headlining celebrity guests at G-FEST 2007.

Long after it was completed, I finally had the chance to sit down and watch Damon Foster's G-FEST 2007 DVD that has already been making the rounds amongst G-FEST attendees. As usual, Damon did an excellent job in balancing humor with the more scholarly aspects of the convention (such as the celebrity guest interviews).

The disc contains its share of crude humor, so be warned! It's certainly not intended for all people.

What's more, Damon's DVD provided a window into G-FEST's past and displayed a much simpler time, a time before lasagna and stuffed peppers ruined fandom for everyone.

I highly recommend Damon's G-FEST 2007 compilation. Get your copy today!

Happy birthday, Rhodes Reason!

The happy couple: Rhodes and his wife Jeri in a recent photo. Photo courtesy of Jeri Reason.

Rhodes Reason, the actor known to Toho fans as Carl Nelson in King Kong Escapes, celebrates his 80th birthday today. Mr. Reason, whose other credits include Voodoo Island (opposite Boris Karloff), the Star Trek episode "Bread and Circuses," The Time Tunnel, Perry Mason, The Rifleman, 77 Sunset Strip, and too many others to name, will no doubt celebrate the occasion in style.

Rhodes Reason co-stars with Lucille Ball and Carol Burnett on an episode of The Lucy Show. Really, is this any way to run an airline?!

As the guest of honor at G-FEST XIV in 2007, Mr. Reason was a big hit with the attendees and enjoyed the convention himself. I know we'd love to have him back.

Happy birthday, Rhodes! I hope it's a great one!

Lunch with Rhodes Reason

Brett with Jeri and Rhodes Reason.

Okay, so maybe life in the desert isn't so bad. I just got back from lunch with Rhodes Reason and his charming wife Jeri. We ate at The River, which is a shopping center that is literally right next to where I live in Rancho Mirage! Yes, there are definitely perks.

We haven't seen each other since G-FEST 2007, so it was great to speak with Rhodes on a variety of topics, including his memories of the late Soupy Sales. It was a great time, and another get-together will probably be arranged in the near future. All in all, a great way to spend an afternoon!
