Tokyo Comic Con 2018

The entrance to the Tokyo Comic Con. Photo by Brett Homenick.

Today, I attended the first day of the Tokyo Comic Con. It's the only day I could attend the convention, and my overall reaction was that it was okay. The event was held at Makuhari Messe in Chiba City, which is far from the center of Tokyo. I was surprised to see that the event itself was smaller in size than Wonder Festival, even though I'd say that both events are quite similar.

Aside from bumping into cult director Minoru Kawasaki, I didn't see any familiar faces from the world of tokusatsu. Anyway, I'll let the pictures speak for themselves. Enjoy!

Margot Kidder Passes Away at Age 69

With actress Margot Kidder in May 2009.

Margot Kidder's passing has just been announced by various news outlets. I was lucky enough to meet Ms. Kidder at a horror con in May 2009, and she surpassed all my expectations. I was never much of a Superman fan (in any of the character's incarnations), but I wanted to meet Ms. Kidder, so I bought a lobby card from Brian De Palma's Sisters (1973) for her to sign.

Despite being one of the bigger names at the convention, I found her to be one of the friendliest guests. He had an nice chat in which she seemed genuinely interested in what I had to say. That memory was one of the highlights of my convention-going experiences in America, and I'm very sorry to hear that she has passed away.

RIP, Ms. Kidder.

Brett and the real Lois Lane

Brett meets Margot Kidder at Monsterpalooza 2009.

I attended Monsterpalooza in Burbank last May and had the pleasure of meeting Margot Kidder. While she has starred in countless movie and television roles, her best-known part was that of Lois Lane in Superman (1978). While other actresses have played the part before and since, none could capture the spirit Ms. Kidder brought to the role.

A close-up look at the autograph.

All in all, Monsterpalooza was a great event. In fact, hypothetically speaking, if you were to come up to me and ask, "You came all the way out here for this?!" I'd happily answer, "You betcha!" I hope to attend next year.
